Harnessing University Expertise to Create Meaningful Social Design Projects

The Office of Sustainability develops project-based courses centered on social engagement, social innovation, social design, and social impact, bringing together the expertise of faculty and students to address pressing societal challenges. These projects tackle issues such as poverty, environmental degradation, transportation, declining birth rates, population aging, housing affordability, living quality, energy sustainability, food safety, waste management, and public safety, while cultivating practical solutions with lasting social value.

Crossing Continents to West Africa: FCU Students Embark on a Sustainability Journey in Burkina Faso

In the summer of 2025, five students from Feng Chia University departed for Burkina Faso in West Africa for a month-long overseas internship and sustainability initiative. Traveling more than 10,000 kilometers to the capital city of Ouagadougou, they worked directly with local communities to promote environmental technologies and rural development projects, putting into practice the University's commitment to global engagement and social responsibility.

Study Abroad Internship Program: FCU Students at the “Taiwan Center” on the Turkish–Syrian Border

Through Taiwan's Ministry of Education overseas professional internship program, Feng Chia University annually sends students to the Taiwan-Reyhanli Center for World Citizens on the Turkish–Syrian border.

Interns contribute to improving environmentally friendly soap production processes, adjusting manufacturing methods to local climatic conditions to enhance efficiency and quality. In addition, students take part in a variety of community activities, including serving as translators, introducing the organization to international visitors, assisting with children's programs, supporting language and physical education classes, and proposing designs for children's playgrounds.

Thailand Community Service Project

As part of its social design initiatives, the FCU team delivered 44 refurbished computers donated by the ASUS Foundation to YCF (Young Charity Foundation) and the New Life Center headquarters and branch locations in Thailand.

Faculty and students also provided computer literacy, Chinese-language, and English-language instruction. These programs not only strengthened students' digital skills but also expanded their opportunities for future education and career development.

Planting Trees Under the Ulaanbaatar Sun: Greening the Earth for a Sustainable Future

In the summer of 2024, a team of 16 faculty members and students from Feng Chia University traveled to Mongolia for a month-long exchange program.

Supported by two initiatives—"University Social Responsibility: Rural Carbon Reduction and Green Synergy for International Sustainability" led by Professor Chen-Yeon Chu of the Master’s Program of Green Energy Science and Technology, and "Study Abroad Internship: Urban Greening and Sustainable Development" led by Professor Ming-Shr Lin of the Department of Risk Management and Insurance—the team engaged in tree planting, environmental education, industry visits, and academic exchanges. Through hands-on action, they promoted sustainability concepts and greater awareness of global issues.

Burkina Faso Agricultural Development Project

Agricultural production in Burkina Faso is limited by a short three-month rainy season and insufficient access to fertilizers, resulting in low crop yields.

To address these challenges, Feng Chia University identifies students who are passionate about sustainable development and provides resources and opportunities for them to participate in agricultural support projects in Africa, contributing practical solutions to local communities and advancing global sustainability efforts.

CSR+USR Partnership Model

Advancing University Social Responsibility for Sustainable Development

Through a CSR+USR partnership model, Feng Chia University collaborates with industry partners to promote university social responsibility initiatives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students explore topics such as the SDGs, university social responsibility, and regional revitalization through the University’s core general education curriculum. Project-based and community-engagement courses further encourage student organizations and volunteer teams to develop and implement social participation projects that contribute to sustainable development.

“How Are You?” Chinese-Language Volunteers Making an Impact Around the World

Mandarin Chinese is a language we use every day to communicate and express ourselves. At Feng Chia University, dedicated students from different academic disciplines volunteer their time to teach Chinese to children and international learners in remote regions around the world. Through online interactions and cultural exchange, they help transform language learning into a bridge for meaningful communication and global connection.

University Companions for Rural Communities: Building an Inclusive Mobile Service Network

Feng Chia University promotes interdisciplinary programs focused on Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and future-oriented design. Green Energy Without Borders: Creating a Healthier Future for the Planet

Feng Chia University has long been committed to advancing green energy technologies and has achieved world-leading results in biological hydrogen production. The University's Green Energy Center established the world's first two-stage anaerobic biohydrogen and biomethane power generation facility at a livestock farm in Nantou County, Taiwan. By converting agricultural waste into renewable energy, the project addresses challenges related to food production and waste management, transforming waste into valuable green resources and contributing to a circular economy.

Participatory Guarantee System Supporting Indigenous Agricultural Revitalization

The Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) project promotes indigenous community revitalization through sustainable agriculture. By incorporating technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR), Feng Chia University has developed an online platform that supports product marketing and community development. The initiative helps expand market access for environmentally friendly farming practices while fostering long-term environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

Taichung Cultural Downtown Revitalization Project

his project focuses on the preservation of historic and cultural assets surrounding Taichung Railway Station in the city’s central district. Through 3D modeling and multilingual AR/VR-guided experiences, the initiative enhances cultural tourism and creates immersive opportunities for visitors to explore local history and heritage.

Healing After Disaster: GIS Center Supports Revitalization and Sustainability in Jiufen’er Mountain

The GIS Center introduced the concept of disaster resilience and community revitalization, focusing on environmental sustainability as its guiding theme. By bringing together faculty and students from diverse disciplines, the project integrates academic learning, research, internships, field visits, and hands-on experiences. Working closely with local governments and community partners, the initiative has helped revitalize the Jiufen’er Mountain area, restoring vitality to a once-quiet mountain town and creating new opportunities for sustainable development.
