Feng Chia University Becomes the First University to Join Taichung’s Shared Electric Scooter Program, Creating a New Low-Carbon Commuting Option for Students

To support its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and accelerating transportation electrification, the Taichung City Environmental Protection Bureau has actively promoted a shared electric scooter program on university campuses. Feng Chia University has become one of the first institutions to respond to the initiative, introducing WeMo shared scooter services before the start of the new academic year and establishing a designated parking area at the Kaixuan Parking Lot. As one of Taichung’s pioneering low-carbon campuses, the University is providing students with a green commuting alternative through a “rent instead of buy” model.

On August 13, Sheng-Chung Wu, Director-General of the Taichung City Environmental Protection Bureau, visited Feng Chia University and met with Simon, Chien-Yuan Chen, Dean of the Office of General Affairs; Distinguished Professor Chen-Yeon Chu, Dean of Sustainability; and Distinguished Professor Chih-Chao Wu of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science. Since March this year, the Bureau has convened consultation meetings with 17 colleges and universities across Taichung, facilitating discussions between educational institutions and shared mobility operators. Following several months of coordination, the green transportation partnership with Feng Chia University was officially established.

In the future, students will be able to conveniently rent electric scooters within the campus area using a mobile app, providing a flexible and environmentally friendly transportation option.

Sheng-Chung Wu, Director-General of the Taichung City Environmental Protection Bureau, led a delegation to visit Feng Chia University, where he exchanged views with Simon, Chien-Yuan Chen, Dean of the Office of General Affairs, on parking arrangements and management mechanisms for introducing shared electric scooters to the campus. 

Director-General Sheng-Chung Wu noted that mobile pollution sources are among the most common forms of pollution affecting daily life. Reducing emissions from transportation vehicles is one of the most direct and effective ways to improve air quality and enhance living environments. Since many people begin using personal transportation after the age of 18, promoting low-emission and low-carbon transport options on university campuses can help young adults develop sustainable mobility habits early while reducing transportation-related emissions at their source and supporting long-term urban sustainability.

Through the successful coordination of the Taichung City Environmental Protection Bureau, Feng Chia University and a shared mobility operator have established a collaborative model to introduce smart shared electric scooter services. In the future, students will be able to rent electric scooters flexibly through a mobile app without the financial burden of purchasing and maintaining a private vehicle. The initiative lowers barriers to sustainable transportation while reducing reliance on privately owned vehicles, alleviating traffic congestion and emissions around campus, improving parking space efficiency, and creating a more convenient, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly campus transportation environment.

A dedicated parking area for shared electric scooters will be established at the Kaixuan Parking Lot on the Feng Chia University campus. Beginning with the new semester, students will be able to conveniently rent and return electric scooters through a mobile app, providing a flexible and low-carbon commuting option.
