The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has recently announced the recipients of the 115th Academic Year Ta-You Wu Memorial Award. Associate Professor Chun-Wei Huang of Feng Chia University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering distinguished himself among a highly competitive field of outstanding young scholars, recognized for his exceptional contributions to "liquid metal synthesis and applications" and "in situ transmission electron microscopy analysis." Notably, among the 45 award recipients this year, Associate Professor Huang is the sole representative nationwide to receive the honor in the field of materials engineering.

Feng Chia University Department of Materials Science and Engineering Associate Professor Chun-Wei Huang receives the NSTC Ta-You Wu Memorial Award.

Prior to joining Feng Chia University, Associate Professor Huang held positions at TSMC, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and Academia Sinica, and was a recipient of the NSTC's "2030 Cross-Generational Young Scholars Program" grant. Since joining Feng Chia's faculty in 2022, he has built a liquid metal research team of international visibility within just four years.

His research has repeatedly broken through conventional limitations. In 2025, he published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications the world's first demonstration of "electrochemical synthesis of bimetallic MOF (ZnMg-MOF-74) using gallium-based liquid metal"—a technique that successfully overcomes the fundamental bottleneck of traditional solid-state anodes, namely passivation and the release of only a single metal species. This achievement, which establishes a new paradigm for the electrochemical synthesis of multi-metal MOFs, received extensive coverage from media outlets including the Economic Daily News and the Central News Agency (CNA). Additionally, his research in soft robotics represents the first departure from electrolytic solution environments in the field, elevating the control dimensionality of liquid metals from two-dimensional planes to three-dimensional space—results that have likewise appeared in the renowned journal Small.

In addition to consistently publishing high-impact papers in leading academic journals including Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, and Advanced Science, Associate Professor Huang actively bridges research outcomes with industrial needs. Over the past five years, he has led four funded projects—including NSTC disciplinary grants and ITRI industry-academia collaboration projects—with total funding exceeding NT$11.4 million. His liquid metal synthesis methods are currently under patent application, and he is in active discussions with Dah Yueh Vacuum Technology Co. regarding technology transfer and industry-academia collaboration, underscoring the strong applied value and commercialization potential of his work.

Alongside his research endeavors, Associate Professor Huang is deeply committed to student mentorship. He actively guides students in academic competitions with consistent success, including a Distinguished Poster Award at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Materials Research Society in Taiwan and first place at Feng Chia University's Capstone Project Final Presentation Competition. Under his supervision, multiple students have published research findings in leading international journals as first authors. He is also an active participant in the scholarly community, serving as Secretary-General of the Electron Microscopy Society of the Republic of China, and has cultivated a close collaborative network with the research team of Professor Wen-Wei Wu at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University—continually invigorating Taiwan's materials science community.

The Ta-You Wu Memorial Award was established to nurture emerging research talent and encourage pursuit of forward-looking academic inquiry. Associate Professor Chun-Wei Huang's recognition is thoroughly merited, grounded in rigorous scholarly innovation, substantial industry-academia contributions, and a wholehearted dedication to education.
