The 11th Cross-Strait Youth Maker Competition concluded at Tongji University in Shanghai, with Feng Chia University (FCU) teams delivering standout results in the Tongji track's Open Source Innovation category. In total, 35 FCU students across 10 teams won awards, applying artificial intelligence and image recognition technology to real-world problems and capturing two of the competition's top First Prize honors. The winning projects were CareYou, an at-home rehabilitation platform developed jointly by students from the Department of Communications Engineering and the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, and a Badminton Motion Capture and 360° 3D Image Reconstruction system built by students from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science — both demonstrating how technology can be applied to real needs in healthcare and sports.
Feng Chia University teams delivered standout performances at the Tongji University track of the 11th Cross-Strait Youth Maker Competition, winning two First Prize honors.
CareYou, the First Prize–winning at-home rehabilitation platform, was developed by the GDG on Campus FCU student club. The system integrates BlazePose and MoveNet technology to capture body joint positions in real time, allowing patients to complete movement accuracy checks and automatic repetition counts using just a phone or tablet. It also incorporates a locally deployed large language model (LLM) that delivers voice reminders based on the patient's rehabilitation progress, with training results shared with physicians and family members to support a complete remote care workflow.
The FCU team demonstrated the CareYou platform, which allows patients to complete AI-assisted rehabilitation training in a game-like format using only a tablet.
Second Prize went to two projects: Motion Detective Agent and AI Hawk-Eye Defense: Smart Fly Ball Landing Prediction and Training System. The student club iOS Club earned two Third Prize awards, both focused on promoting health among older adults. FitCare, developed by students from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, uses MediaPipe motion recognition to help older adults complete tiered training and movement assessments. Another project, LingYue ("Age Leap"), was developed by a cross-disciplinary team from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, the Department of Finance, and the Department of Photonics. It combines gamified strength and cognitive training with image recognition to assess older adults' abilities, and includes a family interaction feature to help sustain their motivation to participate.
The iOS Club team worked side by side at the Tongji University competition venue, fine-tuning their code and presentation ahead of judging.
The CareYou team demonstrated their tablet and laptop setup to judges at the exhibition area, showing how AI pose recognition interprets rehabilitation movements.
GDG on Campus FCU president Jen-Wei Chang shared that after handing over leadership to incoming president Ming-Cheng Chuan this past July, the team went on to place third nationally at the 22nd National Electronic Design Creativity Competition before heading to Shanghai for the summer competition — a semester of teamwork that built solid hands-on experience. iOS Club president Yen-Min Huang added that the most valuable part of competing was bringing an idea to life step by step, a process that builds the ability to tackle problems, communicate, collaborate, and keep refining one's work.
Founded in 2016, the Cross-Strait Youth Maker Competition is now in its 11th year, co-organized by Tongji University and Feng Chia University, with two parallel tracks: FCU's "Smart Innovation Application" and Tongji's "Open Source Innovation." FCU students completed their campus-level finals on July 9, departed for Shanghai on July 13, took part in an exchange forum and Pitch Party on July 14, and competed against teams from across the region in the Tongji track finals on July 15 and 16.
Feng Chia University noted that student-led technology clubs — including GDG on Campus FCU, iOS Club, AI Club, and Hacker Club, each guided by faculty advisors — have become hubs for hands-on practice and cross-disciplinary learning on campus. The university said it will continue investing resources to encourage students to step outside the classroom and hone their skills on real-world problems, cultivating cross-disciplinary talent capable of solving practical challenges.
