Every year during winter and summer vacations, student organizations and departmental student associations at Feng Chia University organize service-learning teams to serve communities throughout Taiwan. During this year’s winter break, a total of 11 enthusiastic service teams, comprising 360 student volunteers, traveled to 11 elementary schools and accompanied more than 600 children, creating enriching and meaningful holiday experiences. Through companionship and carefully designed educational activities, the teams encouraged children to explore new interests and possibilities beyond the classroom.

Among the participating groups, a joint service team formed by the Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Information and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering visited Macuo Elementary School in Xihu Township, Changhua County. The team also led students on a guided exploration of Little Book House No. 16 (Purple Grape Book House), a community landmark designed by the School of Architecture at Feng Chia University. Through local storytelling and environmental learning activities, children gained a deeper understanding of their community and cultural heritage.

This initiative reflected the Little Book House project’s core values of “caring for others, caring for the land, and caring for architecture,” while demonstrating how interdisciplinary collaboration can generate meaningful social impact and public-service engagement.

During the service period, Hui-Kuang Yu, Dean of Student Affairs, led staff members from the Office of Student Affairs to visit several service sites, offering support and encouragement to participating students. Through face-to-face interactions, the university hoped to inspire students to continue engaging in community service and to demonstrate the social responsibility and civic engagement expected of university students.

In recognition of the university’s long-standing commitment to public service, student organizations also received support this year from the Airtac You-Me Foundation. The additional resources helped service teams better prepare and implement their programs, enhancing both the quality and impact of their activities.

To facilitate experience sharing and encourage deeper reflection on service-learning, the Office of Student Affairs hosted the 2025 Academic Year Winter Service Team Reflection and Achievement Presentation on March 25.

Many team leaders shared that the planning and execution of service projects strengthened their communication skills and problem-solving abilities. Service team members also reflected on the challenges they faced, including extensive lesson preparation and the physical demands of the activities. However, what left the deepest impression was often the emotional farewell at the end of the program, when children expressed their reluctance to part and even shed tears.

For many volunteers, these heartfelt moments became the most meaningful and treasured memories of their service experience.

By organizing reflection and achievement presentations on a regular basis, the Office of Student Affairs provides a platform for service teams to exchange ideas and pass on their experiences. Through presentations and personal reflections from team leaders, future participants gain practical insights while developing a deeper understanding of the core values and significance of service-learning.
