In the final showdown of the 2024 Feng Chia Cup “Jumping Shoes, Flying Youth” Basketball and Volleyball Tournament, the women’s volleyball team of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Science, the men’s volleyball team of the Department of Electrical Engineering, the women’s basketball team of the Department of Mechanical and Computer-Aided Engineering, and the men’s basketball team of the Department of Economics emerged victorious and claimed the Feng Chia Cup championships.
Organized by Feng Chia University and generously sponsored by the Taiwan Footwear Education Foundation, the 2024 First Feng Chia Cup Basketball and Volleyball Tournament aimed not only to promote physical wellness and team spirit, but more importantly, to inspire students to develop a deeper understanding and interest in the footwear industry.
Although traditionally regarded as part of the conventional manufacturing sector—and one that experienced a downturn 30 years ago—the footwear industry has undergone significant transformation over the past decade. With factory relocation trends and the rise of smart manufacturing, the industry has evolved and now integrates diverse fields such as materials science, ergonomics, fashion, and sustainability. The development of a pair of athletic shoes involves key technologies including durability and slip resistance, cushioning, moisture‑wicking breathability, foot protection in the upper structure, heel flexibility and stability, aesthetic design, and overall fit, all of which demonstrate the sector’s breadth and innovation potential.
To actively foster talent for the footwear industry, Feng Chia University and the Taiwan Footwear Education Foundation jointly established the Industry–Academia Collaboration Promotion Committee. The committee consists of footwear industry veterans and university representatives. In addition to offering related courses, the collaboration also leverages diverse industry–academia partnership models—such as corporate internships, athletic events, and recruitment seminars—to help students and faculty gain closer insight into industry trends. The initiative emphasizes that a shoe is more than just a product; it is the result of numerous components, processes, professional knowledge, and the precision of smart manufacturing.
The university hopes that more students will be inspired to join the footwear field in the future, applying their skills and expertise to bring fresh energy and innovation into the industry.
