Honorary Vice President Jyh‑Horng Chou Receives the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chinese Automatic Control Society

Honorary Vice President Jyh‑Horng Chou of Feng Chia University, who is also a Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Computer-Aided Engineering, specializes in automation and control, optimization technologies, artificial intelligence, quality engineering, information technology, and system integration. He has made exceptional contributions to academic research and industry–academia collaboration. Most recently, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Automatic Control Engineering from the Chinese Automatic Control Society (CACS). The award ceremony will be held on October 28.

Honorary Vice President Jyh‑Horng Chou’s forty years of dedication to education and industry have rightfully earned him the Lifetime Achievement Award in Automatic Control Engineering from the Chinese Automatic Control Society (CACS). The entire Feng Chia University community proudly celebrates his achievement.

Dr. Chou received his Ph.D. in Mechatronic Engineering from National Sun Yat-sen University. His academic career began in 1983 at the Kaohsiung Institute of Technology, initiating a lifelong connection with Taiwan’s technical and vocational education system, including Kaohsiung Institute of Technology, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, and National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology. In addition to his extensive teaching experience, he has also held several major administrative positions, such as Department Chair at Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Vice President and Acting President at National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, Vice President at National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences, and Vice President at National Chung Hsing University. From 2013 to 2015, he served as the Convener of the Automation Division of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), and from 2018 to 2023, he served as the Convener of NSTC’s industry–academia collaboration planning in the Mechatronics and Energy domain.

Dr. Chou’s research achievements have also been widely recognized. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the NSTC Outstanding Research Award, the TECO Award from the TECO Technology Foundation, the Academic Publication Award from the Sun Yat-sen Academic and Cultural Foundation, and the Distinguished Engineering Professor Award from the Chinese Institute of Engineers. He has also been elected Fellow of CSME, CACS, CIAE, TFSA, IEEE (USA), IET (UK), and AAIA (Asia-Pacific). Notably, in 2014, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) compiled information on Dr. Chou’s research team, documenting their significant impact across industries; their work became the first and only industry success story featured globally by IEEE CIS.

Dr. Chou has often stated that these international recognitions are deeply connected to his experience advising working professionals in graduate programs, where “teaching and learning reinforce one another.” These opportunities enabled him to pursue research that contributes directly to the advancement of Taiwan’s industrial technologies, creating results with breakthrough value and academic significance.

Despite receiving offers from multiple institutions—even with appointments extending until age 70—Feng Chia University was fortunate that Dr. Chou chose to dedicate his extensive expertise in industry and administration to the university’s mission of educational excellence. In recent years, he has further applied his expertise to the Net‑Zero Sustainability domain, assisting industries with ESG implementation and carbon asset management, and advancing Feng Chia’s unique model of net-zero industry–academia collaboration. Internally, he has provided influential and constructive recommendations, including establishing faculty learning communities, creating AI and net-zero general education courses, and leading a team to publish the e-book “AI Literacy and Fundamental Introduction.” These initiatives have greatly elevated Feng Chia University’s academic influence and societal impact.
