Organized by the Aeronautical and Astronautical Society of the Republic of China and hosted by the Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering at Feng Chia University, the 2026 Taiwan UAV Creative Design Competition was held on August 9 at the Asia UAV AI Innovation Application R&D Center in Chiayi. In conjunction with Chiayi County’s UAV Day event, this year’s competition attracted 26 teams from universities, colleges, senior high schools, and vocational high schools across Taiwan, with more than 130 faculty members and students participating. Students from the Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering at Feng Chia University delivered an outstanding performance, winning the Overall Championship in the Aircraft Creative Category along with two Honorable Mentions. 

The competition featured two categories, Aircraft Design and Aircraft Creative Design, with 12 and 14 teams participating respectively. All three award-winning teams from Feng Chia University were advised by Professor Ming-Chung Lo of the Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering. Among them, Team “Ɐ Project,” consisting of students Chih-Hsiang Kang, Kuan-Hung Cheng, and An-Chi Huang, earned the competition’s highest honor, the Overall Championship in the Creative Category. Their proposal, centered on the concept of a high-speed sea-skimming UAV mothership, featured a platform capable of multi-mode propulsion and the deployment of unmanned subsidiary aircraft.

The Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering at Feng Chia University served as the host department for the 2026 Taiwan UAV Creative Design Competition.

The award-winning Team “Ɐ Project” from the Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering at Feng Chia University captured the Overall Championship in the Aircraft Creative Category. 

In the Aircraft Design Category, Feng Chia University’s Team FlyingJoker received an Honorable Mention. Led by team captain Cheng-Lun Hsu, together with team members Yi-An Lung, Po-Chun Chiu, Yu-Cheng Hsiao, Yu-Chen Hu, and Shao-Po Ting, the team developed a large fixed-wing UAV platform tailored to mission requirements and successfully integrated an unmanned ground vehicle system, completing flight verification of an air-ground collaborative mission in a real-world environment. 

Another creative-category team,“Want Fried Noodles with Pork Blood Soup”, led by Chiao-Lin Chuang and joined by Chieh-Sheng Chang, Hung-Hsuan Chiang, and Kai-Yu Chen, proposed the“Chameleon: Reconfigurable UAV” concept. Featuring a single-motor architecture and auxiliary wing design, the project demonstrated a fault-tolerant mechanism that enables continued flight even when the main wing is damaged, earning an Honorable Mention in the Aircraft Creative Category.

For students, bringing an aircraft they designed themselves to the runway is one of the most valuable aspects of engineering education. An aircraft that performs well in computer simulations is not guaranteed to fly successfully once built. Factors such as weight and center of gravity, structural strength, propulsion systems, controllability, weather conditions, and flight operations can all affect mission performance. Through repeated testing, failure, refinement, and verification, students accumulate real-world engineering experience, which is one of the most important educational values of UAV competitions.

Jin-Yi Chen, Dean of the College of Engineering and Science at Feng Chia University; Chia-Ching Lee, current President of the Aerospace Alumni Association; and Jui-Fu Liu, former President of the Association, attended the event as award presenters. Their presence allowed participating students to showcase their practical achievements and engage directly with aerospace industry professionals and alumni.

Yuan-Jen Chang, Chair of the Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering at Feng Chia University, joined alumni in participating in the 2026 UAV Day activities, demonstrating the Department’s strong connections with its alumni network and continued engagement with the development of Taiwan’s unmanned aerial vehicle industry.

The Department of Aerospace and Systems Engineering has long been dedicated to teaching and research in aviation, space systems, and unmanned vehicle technologies. Through hands-on courses, student projects, competitions, and industry-academia collaboration, the Department continues to guide students in transforming engineering theories into fully integrated systems that can be designed, manufactured, tested, and flown. This year, the Department took charge of competition planning and on-site event operations, providing students with the opportunity to confront real-world challenges such as weather conditions, flight safety, and system readiness at the Asia UAV AI Innovation Application R&D Center. Moving forward, Feng Chia University will continue to cultivate aerospace and UAV professionals with strong system integration capabilities through experiential learning and participation in national-level competitions.
