The 26th Macronix Golden Silicon Awards – Semiconductor Design and Application Contest, often regarded as the “Oscars” of Taiwan’s electronics and electrical engineering industry, held its awards ceremony on July 25. Competing against 274 teams and nearly 1,000 faculty members and students from 33 universities and colleges nationwide, two student teams from Feng Chia University distinguished themselves by winning the Jury Gold Award and Jury Bronze Award in the Application Category.

The project that earned the Jury Gold Award was titled “Semiconductor Precision Inspection and Analysis Technology Based on Cross-Modal Semantic Correlation.” The team was jointly advised by Professor Feng-Cheng Lin of the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science and Professor Tzu-Wang Shen of the Department of Automatic Control Engineering. Team members included master's students Chun-Yu Hung and Hsing-Hao Yeh, junior student Chih-Chia Fan from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, and master's student Yun-Ching Pu from the Department of Automatic Control Engineering.

As semiconductor manufacturing processes continue to shrink, traditional inspection methods face increasing challenges. The Feng Chia team developed a system centered on optical non-contact image acquisition, integrating cross-modal semantic correlation and artificial intelligence reasoning technologies. The innovation reduces inspection time from the conventional 2 to 4 hours to just 2 to 3 minutes.

The breakthrough of the technology lies not only in identifying where a defect exists, but also in determining why the defect occurred and providing recommendations for improvement. This advancement transforms semiconductor inspection from simply detecting defects into a diagnostic process capable of identifying root causes, thereby elevating the capabilities of semiconductor metrology and inspection technologies.

Professor Feng-Cheng Lin explained that the project originated from real challenges faced by the semiconductor industry. He emphasized that receiving recognition at Taiwan’s most prestigious competition is a testament to the students’ hard work and demonstrates Feng Chia University’s strength in interdisciplinary integration and practice-oriented education.

The team receiving the Jury Bronze Award in the Application Category was led by Professor Chun-Li Chin of the Department of Automatic Control Engineering. Team members included Yi-Wei Chen, Tzu-Hung Yang, and Chin-Yu Hung from the Department of Automatic Control Engineering, together with Cheng-Hsien Lin from the Bachelor's Program in Artificial Intelligence Technology and Applications.

Their project, titled “Hear and See Words: An Audiovisual Integrated Communication and Rehabilitation System for Hearing-Impaired Speech Restoration Using Edge Computing and Generative AI,” was developed to address communication challenges faced by individuals with hearing impairments.

Through extensive engagement with hearing-impaired associations, the team observed the difficulties many hearing-impaired individuals encounter when communicating via telephone in workplace settings. To address this issue, they integrated a traditional telephone with a custom-designed 3D-printed mechanism to create a system capable of converting conversations into text in real time. The platform also provides conversation summaries and response suggestions.

Furthermore, the system incorporates a fuzzy-gated convolutional neural network that can transform unclear speech into more intelligible audio, helping users overcome the dual challenges of hearing unclear speech and being difficult to understand when speaking.

Professor Chun-Li Chin and the student team shared that the development process was far from smooth. Previous disappointments in other competitions motivated the team to reexamine practical user needs and continually refine their work. The current second-generation system represents the culmination of one year of development and the collective efforts of students from multiple cohorts.

Feng Chia University has long promoted the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) engineering education philosophy, guiding students to transform emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and mechatronic integration into practical industry solutions through hands-on projects.

Recently, the University has achieved a series of notable milestones in the semiconductor field. In addition to winning both Gold and Bronze Awards at the Macronix Golden Silicon Awards, a laboratory team led by Dean Chi-Chang Wang of the College of Engineering and Science also received the inaugural Semiconductor Equipment Innovation Award from the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA).

These consecutive achievements highlight Feng Chia University’s commitment to learning by doing and provide a strong foundation of confidence and industry-academia collaboration for the planned establishment of a College of Semiconductor Technology in Academic Year 2027–2028, further strengthening the University’s future semiconductor talent development efforts.
