Dean Chi-Chang Wang of the College of Engineering and Science, Feng Chia University (FCU), led 10 faculty members and 21 students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering and Science, and Department of Photonics to Japan from June 21–25 to participate in the three-day Kyushu University × Feng Chia University Bilateral International Interdisciplinary Workshop at Kyushu University’s Graduate School of Engineering.
The partnership between FCU and Kyushu University spans education, research, and industry-academia collaboration. Over the past 13 years, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has invited Honorary Professor Yoshinobu Kawai as a visiting professor and collaborated with Chair Professor Ju-Liang He on industry projects. Since 2019, the department has also conducted overseas intensive courses and, with the support of Chair Professor Shin-Chia Lin, expanded student exchange and dual-degree opportunities with Kyushu University.
The workshop focused on plasma science, photonic devices, sustainability and energy, and advanced materials. Opening remarks were delivered by Chen-Hao Yeh, Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Session chairs included Professor Yi-Hsin Chien, Associate Professor Chun-Wei Huang, I-Hsiang Tseng, and Shu-An Lee. FCU speakers included Assistant Professors Chih-Chiang Wang, Yu-Chung Chang, Wen-Kai Lin, Chih-Hao Chuang, and Yi-Ting Chiu. Kyushu University speakers included several faculty members specializing in engineering and applied sciences.

Dean Chi-Chang Wang led a delegation of 31 faculty members and students from FCU at Kyushu University’s Chikushi Campus.
Supported by the Ministry of Education’s Bilingual Education for Students in College (BEST) Program, the workshop featured nine students presenting oral papers in English and twelve students presenting posters in English. Participants noted significant improvements in their English communication skills through academic presentations and informal cultural exchanges.

During the visit, Dean Chi-Chang Wang and Satoshi Hata, Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering at Kyushu University, signed a Letter of Intent for a Dual Master’s Degree Program, underscoring both universities’ commitment to international talent cultivation and long-term academic cooperation.
“Every participant here serves as a bridge between Kyushu University and Feng Chia University,” said Dean Wang. “We look forward to further strengthening this partnership through the dual-degree program scheduled to launch next year.”

The delegation also visited laboratories in electronic systems engineering, catalysis and energy, plasma applications, and environmental engineering, as well as QUEST, Japan’s largest spherical fusion research facility. Both sides held in-depth discussions on the implementation of the dual master’s degree program.
FCU hopes this collaboration will provide students with broader international learning opportunities, deepen Taiwan–Japan higher education ties, and mark a new milestone in cultivating globally competitive engineering and science talent.
