The Office of International Affairs at Feng Chia University organized an overseas study program at Konkuk University in South Korea from July 1 to July 19. A total of 19 students participated in the three-week summer program, which was conducted entirely in English. The curriculum covered topics including K-Psychology, K-Aesthetics, and virtual reality applications. Students from Feng Chia University also engaged in discussions and collaborative projects with peers from the United States, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and other countries, gaining valuable cross-cultural communication skills and practical international experience.
Nineteen Feng Chia University students attended classes alongside peers from around the world at Konkuk University.
During the three-week intensive program, Konkuk University offered not only academic courses but also a Buddy Program and off-campus excursions to help students gain a deeper understanding of Korean culture and daily life. Field visits included the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Gangwon Province.
Jin-Ting Lee, a student from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, noted that the psychology course extended well beyond theoretical instruction. Drawing on traditional Korean culture and contemporary social issues, the professor encouraged students from different countries to exchange perspectives on educational systems and cultural backgrounds, fostering cross-cultural understanding and critical thinking. Meanwhile, the aesthetics course incorporated Korea’s renowned beauty industry. In addition to introducing skincare ingredients and product knowledge, the instructor led students on visits to cosmetic retailers, providing practical insights into how products are selected based on individual needs and thereby reinforcing classroom learning through real-world experience.
Combining academic instruction, the Buddy Program, and off-campus excursions, students naturally strengthened their confidence in foreign-language communication and enhanced their cross-cultural communication skills through three weeks of immersive interaction.
Students reported significant growth in both intercultural engagement and language proficiency. Kai-Hsin Huang, a student from the Department of Economics, shared that during the first week of the program, she lacked confidence in expressing her ideas in English. However, after adapting to the environment, she was able to communicate her thoughts fluently by the second week and actively engage with international classmates.
Chieh Hsu, a student in the Bachelor’s Program of Artificial Intelligence Technology and Applications, noted that studying and living in a fully English-speaking environment not only improved her English and Korean language skills, but also provided opportunities to introduce Taiwanese culture to students from around the world during meals and extracurricular activities. She remarked that the experience taught her to respect cultural differences while allowing her to build meaningful international friendships.
The overseas study program offered Feng Chia University students an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and apply their academic knowledge in a genuine international environment. Through professional coursework, field visits, and interactions with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, students were able to broaden their global perspectives and develop practical international competencies. Feng Chia University will continue to expand overseas exchange opportunities and international learning resources, encouraging students to engage with the world and strengthen their global competitiveness.
Through the summer program at Konkuk University, students from Feng Chia University interacted closely with peers from around the world, gaining firsthand experience in cross-cultural learning and communication through everyday exchanges.
