The National Science and Technology Council has recently announced the approved list for the 115th Academic Year College Student Research Projects. Feng Chia University achieved outstanding results with a total of 145 approved projects, ranking seventh among all universities and colleges nationwide. This performance places the university ahead of several national and medical universities and secures its position as the top comprehensive private university in Taiwan for another consecutive year.

Feng Chia University has long cultivated students through diverse channels such as professional competitions, corporate internships, international exchanges, and cross-disciplinary learning. The College Student Research Project funded by the National Science and Technology Council stands as one of the most prestigious platforms for academic practice. Under the guidance of a Teacher, students independently plan and execute research, accumulating the ability to solve real-world problems. This experience often becomes the most compelling aspect of their academic and professional resumes. This year, Feng Chia University submitted a total of 333 project applications, representing a growth of over 17 percent compared to the 284 applications last year, and achieved an approval rate of over 43 percent. Behind these 333 applications were 333 Teachers who personally dedicated themselves to mentoring. This participation accounted for 49 percent of all full-time Teachers at the university, who accompanied students across the threshold of academic research, guiding them from topic conceptualization and literature review to project proposal writing.

According to official statistics, the top six institutions in terms of approved projects are National Taiwan University with 305 projects, National Cheng Kung University with 197 projects, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University with 194 projects, China Medical University with 159 projects, National Tsing Hua University with 154 projects, and National Chung Hsing University with 146 projects. Feng Chia University proudly ranks seventh nationwide with 145 approved projects.

The topics of the approved projects this year span a wide range of fields, including artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, semiconductor manufacturing processes, medical and health technology, environmental sustainability and ESG, and optoelectronic communications. These projects prominently feature two major trends: the deepening of AI technologies and the broadening of cross-disciplinary applications.

Among the selected projects this year, the application of AI and machine learning has deeply penetrated fields such as biomedicine, ecology, disaster prevention, and cybersecurity:

  • Advancing Medical Imaging Diagnostics: Chieh-Hsin Yao, a student from the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science, is executing a project titled Combining 3D Deep Learning and Large Language Models for Nodule Detection and Automated Diagnostic Report Generation in Lung CT Images. This research utilizes cutting-edge AI technology to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of lung nodule diagnostics.
  • Ecological Monitoring and Environmental Protection: Jou-Hsuan Chiang, a student from the Bachelor's Program of Artificial Intelligence Technology and Application, is working on a Deep Learning-Based Automatic Image Recognition System for Leopard Cats—A Case Study of the Dajia River Basin in Dongshi, Taichung. This project focuses on the ecological monitoring of the endangered leopard cat in the local Taichung area, utilizing deep learning to build an automatic recognition system and fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals for life on land.
  • Robotics and Automation Technology: Yun-Chiao Chen, a student from the Department of Automatic Control Engineering, is researching a VLM-Driven Vineyard Semantic Understanding and Automated Netting Robot to advance agricultural automation.
  • Smart Security and Disaster Prevention Assistance: Chen-Han Huang, a student from the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Conservation, is developing a system for Lowering the Threshold of Disaster Prevention Plan Writing Using Hybrid Retrieval and Traceable Generation to assist individuals and enterprises in rapidly producing standard operating procedures for disaster prevention.
  • Cybersecurity and Digital Identity Verification: Hung-Cheng Chen, a student from the Bachelor's Program of Artificial Intelligence Technology and Application, is developing a Lightweight Embedding Model and CBs-Based Palm AIoT Identity Verification Mechanism. This system aims to support fast-track airport clearance and reduce inspection times, thereby saving valuable time and costs.

In the face of current global competition and the rapid iteration of generative AI technologies, and in response to changing learning paradigms and industrial demands, Feng Chia University is committed to building an artificial intelligence learning environment. The university emphasizes innovative project-based learning frameworks, diverse cross-disciplinary learning pathways, and differentiated instruction. Furthermore, it continuously integrates the CDIO educational framework into its curriculum, cultivating students with the innovative capabilities necessary to participate in the upgrading and transformation of modern industries.
