Ten years ago, a scholarship enabled her to study in Spain. Ten years later, she returned to Feng Chia University with gratitude and donated NT$100,000 so that the kindness she received could continue to benefit future students.

On June 16, Yi-Chun Hung, an alumna of the Department of Photonics, returned to campus to donate NT$100,000 to the President Paul-Lung Chang Memorial Scholarship. Her donation fulfilled a promise she had made a decade ago and demonstrated how the seeds of care and generosity planted by the late “Angel President,” President Paul-Lung Chang, continue to bear fruit.

Following President Chang’s passing in 2014, Mrs. Shuhsian Wang and their two children established the President Paul-Lung Chang Memorial Scholarship at Feng Chia University using donations made in his memory. The scholarship was created to continue President Chang’s dedication to education and his deep concern for students. Since the 2015 academic year, the fund has exclusively supported students participating in international exchange programs. To date, 33 students have benefited, studying in destinations including the United States, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Finland, Australia, and Japan.

Mrs. Wang recalled that before every recipient departed, she would personally meet with them and explain the origins of the scholarship:

“You should know where this funding comes from. It is the result of countless acts of kindness from alumni and friends, as well as the savings President Chang accumulated through his frugal lifestyle and frequent travel between Taipei and Taichung.”

She would encourage students to cherish the opportunity and remain grateful. She also expressed a hope that, if circumstances allowed, recipients might one day return the favor by supporting the fund themselves, creating a cycle of giving that would continue for generations. Today, that hope has quietly become reality. Seeing a former recipient return after ten years filled her with deep appreciation.

Hung was among the first recipients of the scholarship. In 2016, she participated in an exchange program at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in Spain. Looking back, she believes the experience not only improved her English communication skills but also broadened her global perspective. Interactions with friends from different countries and exposure to Western approaches to thinking and working proved invaluable to her later career. Now employed by a European company, she credits the exchange program with playing a key role in her professional development.

Hung admitted that her decision to study abroad came unexpectedly, and her family initially found it difficult to support the idea. Nevertheless, she applied for the scholarship with hope and, after much prayer, received the opportunity. The encouragement she received from Mrs. Wang gave her the confidence to take that first step beyond Taiwan. Now that she has the means, she hopes to pass the same support on to future generations of Feng Chia students.

Mrs. Wang once wrote:

“May this small seed, the ‘Paul-Lung Scholarship,’ inspire and nurture more outstanding teachers and university presidents.”

Today, that seed has taken root in Yi-Chun Hung. Through her donation, a cycle of generosity continues, waiting quietly to support the next young student preparing to embark on a life-changing journey abroad.

Mrs. Shuhsian Wang and Department of Photonics alumna Yi-Chun Hung were brought together through the scholarship. Reuniting after ten years, they hope to see this spirit of giving continue to inspire future generations.
