The 21st National Exhibition of Planning Departments’ Studio Projects was held on May 23 at the University of Taipei, bringing together 14 planning-related departments from 13 universities across Taiwan. Students from the Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Information at Feng Chia University earned awards for both of their featured projects, extending the department’s remarkable record of receiving recognition for six consecutive years at the exhibition.
Among this year’s award-winning entries,“Grape-Scented Innovation, Smart Dacun” received the Creative Planning Award under the Outstanding Planning category, while“Weaving for Aging in Place” earned an Honorable Mention in the Innovative Urban Regeneration Planning Award category. Both projects focused on Changhua County’s Dacun Township and addressed local issues from different perspectives—industrial transformation and age-friendly community development—demonstrating students’ strong analytical abilities and capacity for spatial planning integration.

Transforming Dacun Through Agricultural Innovation and Industrial Upgrading
The project“Grape-Scented Innovation, Smart Dacun” examined the long-standing coexistence of agriculture and industry within Dacun Township. While the western part of the township is dominated by grape cultivation and agricultural production, the eastern area has become a manufacturing hub. The overlapping land-use patterns have led to challenges involving industrial competition, environmental impacts, and insufficient supporting infrastructure.
To address these issues, the student team proposed an “Industry in the East, Agriculture in the West” development framework. The plan recommends creating specialized industrial zones, integrating small and medium-sized enterprises into organized clusters, and connecting rural public spaces with tourism routes. The proposal aims to establish a sustainable rural environment that balances economic development with quality of life.
Planning for an Aging-Friendly Community
The second project,“Weaving for Aging in Place,” responded to the realities of an aging population in Dacun Township, where residents aged 65 and above accounted for 18.2% of the population in 2025.
Centered on the vision of healthy aging, aging in place, and dignified end-of-life care, the plan focused on the Dacun Urban Planning Area and introduced a three-tier strategy described as“Weave, Mend, and Stitch.”
Weave: Connect public facilities and care service hubs to rebuild community support networks.Mend: Introduce age-friendly housing, community care centers, and exercise facilities to address gaps in care resources.Stitch: Revitalize religious sites and traditional courtyard residences to create culturally rooted gathering spaces.
The proposal also aligns with the policy direction of Taiwan’s upcoming Long-Term Care 3.0 initiative.
The FCU Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Information team receives the Creative Planning Award for its project Grape-Scented Innovation, Smart Dacun. The award is presented by Wen-Yen Chien, Executive Supervisor of the National Association of Urban Planners, R.O.C.
The team behind Weaving for Aging in Place receives an Honorable Mention in the Innovative Urban Regeneration Planning Award category from Wu-Tsung Wang, Division Chief of the Urban Regeneration Construction Division, National Land Management Agency.
Learning Through Real-World Planning Practice
Both award-winning projects were produced as part of the junior-year course Urban Planning and Spatial Information Practicum (V). Students completed the full planning process, from data collection and field investigations to issue analysis and proposal development.
The projects were jointly supervised by faculty members Yueh-Sung Weng, Li-Wei Liu, Wen-Cheng Tseng, Pei-Yin Ko, Yi-Su Chen, and Yi-Hsiang Hsu. In addition, Hao-Hsiang Hsu from the Department of Interior Design at National Taichung University of Science and Technology participated as an external advisor, providing interdisciplinary guidance.
The Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Information has long emphasized practical training and social engagement, encouraging students to participate in national competitions and inter-university exchanges. Through real-world planning challenges and public exhibitions, students strengthen their abilities in planning communication, spatial analysis, and proposal integration.
Looking ahead, the department will continue to advance its practice-oriented curriculum and deepen interdisciplinary integration between urban planning and spatial information technologies. Through these efforts, it aims to cultivate a new generation of planning professionals equipped with technical expertise, community awareness, and a commitment to sustainable development.
