Apache and Black Hawk Helicopters Make a Spectacular Landing at Feng Chia University as Taiwan’s Largest Model Competition Takes Off During the Holiday Weekend

The Taiwan International Model Competition: 4th Taichung Weiyi Cup and National Science Fiction Cup League, the largest and most internationally recognized model exhibition and competition in Central Taiwan, was held on April 4–5 at the Gymnasium and Athletic Field of Feng Chia University.

This year’s event gathered more than 400 top model enthusiasts from Taiwan and abroad and showcased nearly 800 exquisite works spanning multiple categories. In cooperation with Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, the organizers also brought the AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopter and the UH-60M Black Hawk Helicopter to the Feng Chia University campus for public display, creating one of the event’s biggest attractions.

To ensure the safety and smooth operation of the holiday exhibition, the military conducted a trial landing on the university athletic field on April 2 using the specially painted “Tiger” helicopter. The impressive appearance of the aircraft quickly became a hot topic and attracted numerous aviation enthusiasts and model hobbyists eager to visit the campus in advance.

This marked the second consecutive year that the competition was held at Feng Chia University. The Ministry of National Defense further supported the event by displaying several active-duty military vehicles and equipment, including the Clouded Leopard eight-wheeled armored vehicle, a psychological operations broadcasting vehicle, and a special operations assault vehicle.

However, the highly anticipated helicopter landing demonstration faced a significant challenge from unstable weather conditions during the holiday weekend. On the first day of the event, April 4, continuous rainfall forced organizers to cancel the helicopter landing schedule due to flight safety considerations, disappointing many visitors who had waited in the rain. Fortunately, weather conditions improved on April 5, allowing the AH-64E Apache and UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to make their dramatic landing on campus amid enthusiastic cheers from the large crowd gathered on site.

Beyond being an annual celebration for model enthusiasts, the event also served as an excellent platform to strengthen public awareness of national defense and promote understanding of advances in defense technology. In addition to the military equipment displays, the Ministry of National Defense established a military recruitment area, offering students opportunities to explore potential career paths through direct interaction with military personnel. The event concluded successfully, bringing together education, technology, defense, and public engagement in a memorable two-day exhibition.
