The annual achievement exhibition of the Ministry of Education’s Cross-Disciplinary Faculty Development and Talent Cultivation Program, themed “Crossing Borders, Creating Impact,” was held on March 14 at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei.
As a collaborating institution in the New Engineering Education Methods Experiment and Development Program, Feng Chia University’s College of Construction and Development participated in the exhibition to demonstrate its achievements in educational innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Led by Professor Yi-Hsiang Hsu, Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Information, and Professor Yung-Chung Chuang, an interdisciplinary faculty team comprising members from the Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Land Management, and Department of Transportation and Logistics traveled to Taipei to present the university’s innovative educational practices alongside partner institutions from across Taiwan.
The College of Construction and Development at Feng Chia University actively advances the transformation of engineering education by integrating Design Thinking and Project-Based Learning (PBL). Since its launch, the program has attracted students from a wide range of academic disciplines.
The Feng Chia exhibition highlighted a practice-oriented approach to learning, showcasing the outcomes of five professional workshops that integrated the Design Thinking methodology into teaching and learning.
Exhibition topics included:
- Micro-hydropower generation
- Smart monitoring technologies
- Land development
- Sustainable shipping
- Urban and regional planning
The exhibits documented students’ complete learning journeys—from identifying real-world challenges and engaging in interdisciplinary integration to developing innovative solutions.
Each project was closely aligned with industry trends and sustainability issues.
In the Micro-Hydropower Generation project cluster, students conducted on-site field measurements at Chaoyang Creek and transformed theoretical knowledge into quantitative indicators related to power-generation potential and carbon-reduction benefits.
Meanwhile, the Smart Monitoring Workshop combined civil engineering expertise with LEGO Education robotics technology. Students explored the fundamentals of programming logic and developed systems capable of real-time structural vibration monitoring and analysis.
In the areas of urban planning and industry engagement, students participated in workshops based on actual government projects, examining topics such as low-carbon development and urban resilience. The Sustainable Shipping Workshop introduced ESG-oriented carbon reduction strategies and data analysis methods. Through role-playing simulations and feedback from industry professionals, students developed practical implementation roadmaps and significantly strengthened their ability to address real-world industrial challenges.

Throughout the exhibition, the Feng Chia delegation actively engaged with representatives from partner universities, exchanging experiences and discussing practical approaches to interdisciplinary teaching.
The College of Construction and Development indicated that insights gained through these exchanges will be incorporated into future teaching practices. Planned initiatives include the formal integration of Design Thinking courses into the academic credit system and the establishment of pre- and post-course assessment mechanisms to evaluate learning outcomes.
Through these efforts, the college aims to continue cultivating sustainable engineering professionals equipped with interdisciplinary integration skills that meet the evolving needs of industry and society.
