To strengthen sustainability literacy and enhance sustainable university governance, the Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility at Feng Chia University organized two thematic workshops in March. The events included the “Sustainability Literacy Enhancement and Sustainability Report Translation Workshop” on March 19 and the “Building a Green Office: Sustainability Action Workshop” on March 24. Together, the workshops addressed both sustainability disclosure and practical implementation, encouraging campus-wide dialogue and alignment toward sustainable development goals.
The Sustainability Literacy Enhancement Workshop brought together sustainability report contributors and representatives from various university units. Professor Shih-Ching Liu of the Department of International Business shared insights from the perspective of corporate practice, introducing emerging trends and the core framework of sustainability reporting.
Using leading corporations such as TSMC as examples, along with discussions of international sustainability disclosure standards, Liu explained that ESG reporting has evolved beyond a disclosure tool and has become an important language for organizational governance, strategic communication, and stakeholder engagement.

Building on the previous workshop’s focus on “making sustainability visible,” the Building a Green Office: Sustainability Action Workshop emphasized putting sustainability into practice in everyday work environments.
Centered on the concept of green offices, the workshop provided a systematic overview of the university’s ongoing initiatives in energy conservation, carbon reduction, waste minimization, sustainable procurement, and environmental greening. Campus practitioners were also invited to share their experiences, demonstrating real examples of bottom-up sustainability efforts across the university.
Participants engaged in discussions on topics such as reusable lunchbox systems and plastic reduction initiatives, while a succulent plant DIY activity offered a hands-on opportunity to experience sustainable living in practice.
The workshop itself also served as a model of low-carbon event management. Measures such as paperless meetings, reusable tableware, and the use of personal eco-friendly supplies demonstrated practical approaches to reducing environmental impact and contributed to measurable carbon-reduction outcomes.
Yu-Ching Tsai from the Department of Chinese Literature shared how creating an environment that is engaging, enjoyable, and welcoming can encourage students to participate actively, making sustainability a natural cultural transformation rather than merely a policy requirement.
Ya-Hui Chiu from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering delivered a presentation titled “Green Office: Starting with Our Everyday Work Practices,” sharing practical approaches to incorporating sustainability into daily operations through paperless meetings, energy conservation, resource reuse, and green procurement.
Chih-Chao Wu, Chief Sustainability Officer of the Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, noted that the two workshops approached sustainability from complementary perspectives: understanding sustainability value and putting sustainability into action.
He emphasized that sustainability should not be viewed as an additional workload, but rather as a framework through which existing responsibilities can be reinterpreted and advanced in a more integrated manner.
Looking ahead, the university will continue providing platforms for collaboration and professional development activities to strengthen alignment among departments. By helping every unit’s efforts become visible, Feng Chia University aims to build a sustainability culture that is systematic, cumulative, and scalable across campus.
