On March 27, Feng Chia University hosted its inaugural U-Impact Sustainability Action Challenge, the capstone competition of the freshman Anchor Course program, at Gongshan Hall. A total of 21 interdisciplinary freshman teams participated, each selected as the most promising representative from departmental project-based learning courses.

Centered on the themes of Innovation × Net Zero × Resilience, participating teams addressed real-world challenges on campus and in everyday life by proposing practical, sustainable solutions.

The competition was organized by the Center for Faculty Development with support from the Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility. Faculty members and external experts were invited to evaluate the projects through poster presentations and live project pitches.

During the final round, President Vey Wang expressed the university’s commitment to strengthening the CDIO (Conceive–Design–Implement–Operate) educational model through this institution-wide freshman project competition. He emphasized that the initiative enables first-year students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations while steadily building practical problem-solving capabilities.

After intense competition, a team from the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Conservation claimed the Gold Award with its project, “A New Vision for Smart Disaster Prevention.” Integrating LiDAR scanning and 3D modeling technologies into shelter planning for Taitung, the project combines disaster prevention technologies with human-centered design to improve evacuation routes and resource allocation.

A freshman team from the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Conservation received the Gold Award for its project, A New Vision for Smart Disaster Prevention, presented by President Vey Wang.

Two teams received Silver Awards.

The first, from the Department of Chemical Engineering, developed the “Oyster Ecological Water Purification Project.” By combining ecological concepts with chemical engineering technologies, the project utilizes oysters’ natural filtration capabilities to improve water quality while incorporating circular economy principles to repurpose discarded oyster shells and related resources.

The second Silver Award went to a freshman team from the Bachelor’s Program of Business (Dual Degree with The University of Queensland). Their project, “AquaSense Smart Campus Resilience System,” integrates Internet of Things (IoT) sensing technologies with the LINE messaging platform to create a smart management framework based on sensing, reporting, and incentives. The solution aims to improve facility utilization and water resource management on campus.

In addition to technology-driven innovations, many projects demonstrated strong social awareness and everyday relevance. For example, students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering addressed campus waste issues through “Reborn Chalk,” a project that recycles unusable chalk fragments into fragrance and moisture-control lifestyle products.

Addressing Taiwan’s pedestrian safety challenges, students from the Department of Photonics developed “Light-Guided Navigation,” which applies visible light communication (VLC) technology to create a safe “light corridor” for visually impaired pedestrians crossing streets.

Meanwhile, students from the Department of Economics designed “No Butt Left Behind,” an interactive cigarette-butt voting and recycling station that leverages behavioral economics concepts to reduce environmental pollution and promote sustainable behavior.

The inaugural competition brought together 21 interdisciplinary freshman teams, whose creativity, innovation, and commitment to sustainability earned high praise from the judging panel.

The final round featured both poster exhibitions and live presentations, providing participants with opportunities to confidently showcase their project concepts and practical solutions.

Through the U-Impact Sustainability Action Challenge, Feng Chia University continues to implement the CDIO educational framework while strengthening hands-on learning opportunities. The competition encourages students to address societal and environmental challenges through concrete action, cultivating future talents with innovative thinking, practical skills, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

The event also served as an important platform for interdisciplinary exchange and project exhibition, highlighting the university’s ongoing efforts in sustainability education and practice-oriented teaching.
