The results of the 2025 Taiwan Sustainable University Awards have been announced, and Feng Chia University once again stood out with its outstanding sustainable governance capabilities. In addition to receiving the “Taiwan Sustainable Model University Award,” Feng Chia also won the “Environmental Management Leadership Award,” the “Workplace Well-being Leadership Award,” and the “Sustainability Report Award—Silver Award,” making it one of the universities with the most awards in Taiwan. These achievements demonstrate Feng Chia’s leading results in the three major aspects of Environment (E), Society (S), and Governance (G).

Feng Chia University, with the core philosophy of “Developing the Spirit of Sustainability through the Doctrine of the Mean,” has made sustainability the driving force of university governance. In addition to establishing the “Sustainability Navigator” to monitor energy, water resources, and greenhouse gas emissions and drive performance management with data, the Virtuosi Hall, designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, is the first negative-carbon campus building in Taiwan. It is estimated that over the next 60 years, nearly 20,000 metric tons of carbon emissions will be reduced, not only concretely achieving carbon reduction goals but also setting a new benchmark for sustainable campus architecture among Taiwanese universities.

The report was jointly compiled by an editorial team led by Professor Shih-Ching Liu from the Department of International Business, together with four students from the Department of International Business and the Department of Cooperative Economics and Social Entrepreneurship, truly fulfilling the commitment that “sustainability is a shared responsibility across the university.” Through cross-departmental collaboration and the integration of diverse perspectives, this report not only deepened the level of campus sustainability governance but also stands as the best testament to Feng Chia’s efforts in cultivating sustainability talent. On the day of the award ceremony, student representatives Yi-Chieh Yu and Yi-Ting Chen from the master’s program in the Department of Cooperative Economics and Social Entrepreneurship were specially invited to attend and share the honor.

In terms of environmental management, Feng Chia University received recognition for its project “Deepening Local Resilience and Cross-disciplinary Collaboration for Sustainable Disaster Prevention.” In response to the challenges of extreme climate, the university collaborated with the Taichung City Government to enhance urban disaster prevention capabilities through the establishment of a disaster response center, business continuity planning, and a regional joint defense mechanism. By utilizing disaster science and GIS technology, the university completed climate risk analysis and disaster loss simulations, and trained over 1,360 disaster prevention specialists, building a collaborative disaster prevention network.

In terms of workplace well-being, Feng Chia University has long been committed to creating a healthy and supportive environment. Starting from the 2023 academic year, the university fully subsidizes health examination fees for faculty and staff and has comprehensively implemented a “smoke-free campus” policy. Campus safety has also been upgraded with the installation of 5G smart poles, AEDs, and emergency response cabinets. Facilities such as sports amenities, a Muslim prayer room, and a breastfeeding room are available on campus, along with occupational physician consultations, psychological counseling, and health promotion activities, forming a comprehensive physical and mental support system. These efforts have been recognized by the Health Promotion Administration with the “Healthy Workplace Certification—Health Promotion Mark.”

Feng Chia University emphasizes that, in the future, it will continue to deepen “university–enterprise–community” tripartite cooperation, with ZEBRA (Net Zero Carbon Emissions, Environmental Restoration, Community Ecology, Local Revitalization, Healthy Aging) as the core, expanding the impact of sustainability to society and the international community. The university will also continue to move toward the goal of climate neutrality by 2041, striving to become a sustainable model university with both local influence and international competitiveness.
