The 2024 Freshman Growth Camp at Feng Chia University was held from September 2 to 4, drawing nearly 4,000 enthusiastic new students. This year’s theme, “Hello, World!”, featured visual designs and a theme video inspired by programming languages and global perspectives, while also highlighting the upcoming Virtuosi Campus Building, scheduled for completion in 2025. The theme encouraged freshmen to embrace the university’s wide range of learning resources, explore beyond boundaries, and look forward to growing confidently within architecturally inspiring learning spaces.

The Freshman Ceremony was held in two sessions, morning and afternoon, with nearly 4,000 freshmen participating enthusiastically.

A Three‑Day Orientation Filled with Exploration and Inspiration

To help new students become familiar with the university, the three‑day camp included a variety of activities such as the Freshman Ceremony, Student Club Expo, Campus Tours, Freshman Concert, Freshman Project sessions, and project presentations.

During the Freshman Ceremony, President Wang, Wei, affectionately known as “Sister Wei,” shared a quote from Feng Ji, the producer of the globally acclaimed game Black Myth: Wukong:

“The journey matters more than reaching the destination. What troubles you is not the mountain ahead but the sand in your shoe.”

She encouraged students to value the importance of embarking on their learning journey with courage.

Distinguished alumnus Chia‑Liang Lin inspired students by sharing his experiences studying at Feng Chia University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Using the four keywords PROJECT, PASSION, PEER, PLAY, he encouraged freshmen to discover their own passion and learning direction. In addition, six current students were invited to deliver short talks on their experiences in professional competitions, international contests, exchange programs, and volunteer service.

The ceremony concluded with a lively session led by Chairperson Cheng‑Shu Kao and three student representatives from the World Economic Forum. Opening with the theme of “Passion,” Chairperson Kao surprised the audience with music, sunglasses, and dance, creating an unforgettable moment that sparked enthusiastic applause from the entire freshman audience.

Freshman Project: Integrating SDGs, AI Tools, and Hands‑On Learning

This year’s Freshman Project extended concepts from the university’s Anchor Courses and incorporated SDG‑related themes, while also integrating AI digital tools from the iSchool. Designed under the CDIO framework, the project allowed students to engage in hands‑on, problem‑based learning—an experience very different from high‑school classrooms.

Students noted that during the 1.5‑day project, collaborating closely with faculty, classmates, and senior students helped them understand different perspectives and experience university‑level learning in advance. Through the process, they practiced systematic thinking, teamwork, time management, and the ability to propose practical solutions. The final planning and presentation sessions provided them with valuable early experiences in their university journey.

The Freshman Project enabled new students to collaborate with faculty members, classmates, and senior students, gaining early exposure to university learning approaches.

During the departmental project presentations, President Wang, Wei reminded students that entering university is about preparing for their future selves. By completing the intensive project—including group discussions, presentations, and dynamic demonstrations—students not only strengthened their academic skills but also began cultivating second specialties and diverse competencies. She encouraged freshmen to follow in the footsteps of FCU students who have excelled in international competitions and to pursue their own achievements over the next four years.
