“What enables a private university to attract students who give up admission to public universities? Is it the faculty, learning resources, scholarships, or career opportunities? For Feng Chia University, which has thrived for over six decades, the answer is impressively simple: all of the above.”

In February 2024, Cheers Magazine published a special report analyzing universities with the highest number of successful candidates in Taiwan’s civil service examinations. The article highlighted Feng Chia University’s exceptional performance, noting its unique strength: “inspiring teachers and motivated students.”

On March 19, the Examination Yuan visited Feng Chia University for a forum titled “Strengthening Collaboration with Universities to Cultivate Civil Service Talent.” The delegation was led by President Rong-Cun Huang, accompanied by Examination Committee Members Hsin-Hsing Wu and Hsiu-Hung Wang, Shu-Hsiang Hsu, Minister of the Ministry of Examination, Shih-Hui Wang, Deputy Director of the Department of Examination Development, and Li-Wen Chen, Section Chief of the Department of Planning.

In his remarks, President Rong-Cun Huang acknowledged the outstanding performance of Feng Chia University students in national examinations and expressed the hope that FCU’s successful experience could be shared with other universities. Deputy Director Shih-Hui Wang presented the latest statistics:

  • Among university graduates within three years, FCU ranked 9th nationwide in the “Administrative” category of the 2023 Senior and Junior Civil Service Examinations.
  • In the “Technical” category, FCU ranked 4th nationwide.
  • Overall, FCU placed 6th nationwide and 1st among private universities in total successful admissions.

As highlighted by Cheers Magazine, faculty guidance plays a crucial role. FCU’s instructors—many with experience writing national exam questions—continuously update course content to align with examination trends. Even retired professors remain deeply engaged; for example, Professor Hsien-Wei Cheng from the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Conservation manages a Facebook group exclusively for alumni, sharing self-produced solution guides, detailed instructional videos, and inviting past exam passers to share study strategies and preparation notes.

Support from alumni is equally invaluable. Their contributions—including past exam collections, mentorship, encouragement, scholarships, and awards—provide current students with both confidence and concrete resources to succeed.

During the forum, two distinguished alumni were invited to share their journeys: Shih-Ting Hsiao, a certified soil and water conservation engineer and graduate of the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Conservation, and Cheng-Lin Yang, a graduate of the Department of Public Finance currently working at the Central District National Taxation Bureau, Ministry of Finance. Their stories left a strong impression on the visiting officials.

Taiwan’s declining birthrate has affected not only university enrollment but also the number of applicants for national civil service examinations. The Examination Yuan’s visit aimed not only to commend Feng Chia University’s faculty and students for their dedication but also to encourage other institutions to draw from FCU’s successful model—attracting more young talent to participate in national examinations and contribute to the nation’s future.
