Five students from our school, namely Yu Jun Jie from Chemical Engineering, Lin Jia Yu from Environmental Engineering and Science, Zhong Yijun from Materials Science and Engineering, Su Yi An and Zhang Qi Fang from Risk Management and Insurance, spontaneously formed a team. They successfully secured funding from the Overseas Volunteer Project of the Youth Development Administration and collaborated with the non-profit organization "TEP Cultural and Educational Association"
The main purpose of this trip was to provide educational services. In order to serve in remote areas of Cambodia, the Feng Chia team prepared English, science and music courses in advance. English course was to teach children self-introduction and animal vocabulary. In the music class, seeing the older students play the guitar and teach songs, the children were inspired to sing English songs.
This service trip to Cambodia brought many revelations to the team members. For example, despite its extremely limited resources, " TEP," a small non-profit organization, has quietly educated one hundred thousand of children over twelve years. Moreover, the largest rural classroom of " TEP," SPS, is actually a thatched house located in a village. Most nearby families rely on farming and raising cattle for a living. Parents are usually busy with farm work and have no time to focus on their children's studies. However, in such a simple thatched classroom, there is a group of the most dedicated, energetic, and hardworking children! Whether they live nearby or ride bicycles for half an hour under the scorching sun every day to study, they greatly inspire the team members.
In just two weeks of service, the Feng Chia team was deeply touched by the children's enthusiasm during teaching and fascinated by their innocent and lively interactions after class. Seeing the children's earnest and dedicated learning, the team members also realized that as university students, they have the ability to influence others.
