Feng Chia University has nearly 7,000 outstanding alumni in Malaysia and has maintained strong and long‑standing ties with the Malaysian overseas community. Since the establishment of the Overseas Youth Vocational Training School in 1964, alumni returning to Malaysia gradually formed alumni associations and began organizing the annual Feng Chia Night celebrations. Every year, university representatives and various alumni associations from different regions attend the Feng Chia University Alumni Association of Malaysia’s Feng Chia Night.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Feng Chia Night. Chairperson Cheng‑Shu Kao and President Wei Wang led a delegation of 12 faculty members to Malaysia on December 8, where they were warmly welcomed with great enthusiasm. More than 1,300 members of the Feng Chia community gathered from afar to celebrate together. The event not only strengthened the emotional bond and loyalty of Malaysian alumni toward Feng Chia University, but also symbolized the unity of Feng Chia alumni worldwide, showcasing the powerful cohesiveness shared by the university’s global community.

On the first day of the Malaysia visit, the Feng Chia University delegation paid a visit to Sin Chew Daily, a 95‑year‑old newspaper that holds the highest circulation among Chinese‑language newspapers in Southeast Asia and is the largest Chinese daily outside of Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The group was personally received by Editor‑in‑Chief Ching‑Chiang Kuo of Media Chinese International (Malaysia) and Sin Chew Daily.

Chairperson Cheng‑Shu Kao praised Sin Chew Daily as a leading force in the Chinese‑language media world. He noted that the newspaper’s pursuit of truth, goodness, and excellence aligns closely with the educational mission of a university. Media, he emphasized, is a form of social education; and in an era when social issues are often sensationalized, maintaining a clear editorial philosophy is especially valuable. He highlighted the significance of Sin Chew Daily’s signature “one page with two headlines” balanced reporting approach.

Chairperson Kao also extended an invitation to Editor‑in‑Chief Kuo to visit Feng Chia University to give lectures and engage in academic exchange, enabling students in Taiwan to gain deeper insight into the editorial process and journalistic values upheld by Sin Chew Daily.

The primary purpose of the Feng Chia University delegation’s visit to Malaysia was to attend the 40th Anniversary Feng Chia Night and the 2023 Feng Chia University Alumni World Carnival, hosted by the Feng Chia University Alumni Association of Malaysia on December 9. In addition to local Malaysian alumni, Ming‑Ho Lee, President of the Feng Chia University Alumni Association, rallied alumni associations from around the world, bringing a total of 275 representatives to Malaysia to join the grand celebration.

During the event, Chairperson Cheng‑Shu Kao shared a video documenting the university’s journey and presented nostalgic photographs from the Overseas Youth Vocational Training School, inviting alumni to reminisce about their cherished memories together. He also led the gathering in honoring Hua‑Ching Chen, an alumnus whose remarkable contributions were instrumental in the development and success of the Feng Chia University Alumni Association of Malaysia. “Without him, the alumni association would not be what it is today,” Kao remarked. He emphasized that it is through the selfless dedication of countless Feng Chia alumni that such meaningful collective memories and a shared hopeful future are possible.

President Wei Wang highlighted that Feng Chia University has always upheld an education grounded in compassion—an approach that nurtures gratitude and connection—which is best exemplified by the Malaysian alumni community. He noted that Feng Chia Night has been held with heartfelt commitment for 40 consecutive years. With emotion, he shared, “Nothing brings greater joy to a teacher than seeing students succeed—and growing older together with them.”

He expressed sincere appreciation to President Ding‑Kuo and his team for their generous contributions of resources and effort, which elevated this year’s celebration to its greatest heights. This embodies the Feng Chia spirit of “Affection and Dedication”, a spirit that not only strengthens the bonds among students, faculty, and alumni, but also helps create a better future for higher education.

Chairperson Cheng‑Shu Kao invited calligraphy master Shih‑Chiung Hsiao to create a plaque inscribed with “Virtue Brings Support; Harmony Draws People Together” to celebrate the post‑pandemic renovation of the Feng Chia University Alumni Association of Malaysia. The use of the character 「德」 (virtue) was chosen to honor distinguished alumnus Te‑Lai Chen for his contributions to the association and its facilities.

The Alumni World Carnival included the University Admission Guidance Seminar and the Malaysia Alumni Continuing Education Forum. The Feng Chia Cup National Chinese Calligraphy Competition for High School Students, now in its 14th consecutive year, achieved a new milestone with over 6,500 participants and a record‑breaking 393 participating schools, earning a place in the Malaysia Book of Records. These impressive accomplishments are the result of the dedication and hard work of the Feng Chia University Alumni Association of Malaysia.

During the admission guidance seminar, Feng Chia University faculty members provided a comprehensive overview of the university’s current development. Over the past 20 years, through the diligent leadership of the Board of Trustees and successive presidents, the university has consistently been recognized nationwide for its outstanding performance, ranking first among private universities in numerous surveys and evaluations.

The university has also been committed to building a sustainable campus, integrating the spirit of University Social Responsibility (USR) into its educational framework. In the recently announced 2024 QS World University Sustainability Rankings, Feng Chia University made its debut on the list and ranked first among Taiwan’s private universities.

Winners of the Feng Chia Cup National Chinese Calligraphy Competition for High School Students wrote calligraphy pieces for guests at the Feng Chia Night outdoor reception. Master Shih‑Chiung Hsiao also demonstrated calligraphy on-site. Chairperson Cheng‑Shu Kao selected the piece “Gong‑Shan” and asked the master to sign it before bringing it back to the university for preservation.

Feng Chia University has always stood at the forefront of higher education, fearlessly embracing the challenges brought by declining birthrates. While many universities in Taiwan have chosen conservative approaches, Feng Chia continues to increase its investments. The Gong‑Shan Building, currently under construction, is the largest development project since the university’s founding. It represents Feng Chia University’s commitment to building an exquisite institution characterized by a beautiful campus and smart learning, and demonstrates the university’s dedication to fulfilling its educational ideals.

Malaysia has long served as one of Feng Chia University’s most important bases for overseas Chinese education. Over the past decades, alumni in Malaysia have made significant contributions to the nation’s economic development while offering steadfast support to their alma mater. Senior alumni, through the alumni association, have provided invaluable career guidance and assistance to younger generations.

Feng Chia University warmly welcomes young Malaysian students who resonate with Feng Chia’s educational philosophy to pursue their studies at the university, continuing a legacy of overseas Chinese education that has endured for more than sixty years.
