International Students Shine in Chinese Speech and Singing Competition: “AI and Me” Takes Center Stage

The Center for General Education and the International Freshman Program (PMP) held the final round of the 2026 Seventh International Student Chinese Speech and Singing Competition on May 22 at the Ninth International Conference Hall, with the event also streamed live online. A total of 76 students from 19 academic departments and eight countries—Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, South Korea, Germany, the United States, and Burkina Faso—registered for the competition.

Following preliminary and final rounds, the top prizes in both categories were awarded to Indonesian students. In the speech category, Yu-Ning Yang from the Department of International Business claimed first place, while Mei-Ya Huang, a master’s student in International Business, won the singing category.

The competition was organized by the Taipei Feng Chia University Alumni Education Foundation and co-organized by the Feng Chia University Alumni Association, Taipei Feng Chia University Alumni Association, and the Liao Ying-Ming Education Foundation, with sponsorship from nine alumni-owned companies. The event opened with remarks by Vice President Shwu-Ting Lee, Alumni Association President Ming-He Lee, Foundation Chairperson Shu-Yuan Chou, and CEO Chun-Tang Chou.

In her opening remarks, Shwu-Ting Lee emphasized that the PMP year is a critical period for international students adapting to campus life in Taiwan. She noted that PMP provides a warm and supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and confidently express themselves. She also thanked alumni for their generous support in creating opportunities for international students to showcase their talents.

The speech competition centered on the theme “AI and Me,” encouraging students to reflect on how artificial intelligence has changed their learning and daily lives. One student from Indonesia explored the idea of letting AI manage every aspect of life and concluded that excessive reliance on technology could diminish meaningful human connections. A student from Japan described AI as a “life mentor,” humorously sharing experiences of using AI for travel planning and daily budgeting, drawing laughter from the audience.

The singing competition was equally engaging. Contestants performed popular Mandarin songs including Rain Butterfly, Girl, A Few Days Later, and Listen to Me. Performances ranged from emotional ballads to energetic stage acts, with some students even wearing traditional costumes and incorporating dance into their performances.

To recognize participants’ efforts, alumni provided additional prize money after the event. Ming-He Lee awarded an extra NT$2,000 to each first-place winner in the speech and singing categories, while Foundation Chairperson Shu-Yuan Chou presented an additional NT$2,000 award to the second-place winner in the singing category. Encouraging students to continue improving, Ming-He Lee remarked that the competition was only the beginning of their future achievements.

PMP Director Hui-Ling Wang expressed gratitude to alumni for establishing additional awards, helping make this year’s prize pool the largest ever. She also thanked faculty members, guests, and sponsoring companies for their support and encouragement, which helped create a welcoming stage for international students to express themselves and build confidence.
