Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage Integrates AI and ESG Feng Chia University Marks Its 21st Year of Public-Service Technology Support

The 2026 Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage, one of Taiwan’s most significant religious events, will officially begin at 10:05 p.m. on April 17. For the 21st consecutive year, the Feng Chia University team is demonstrating its commitment to University Social Responsibility (USR) by sponsoring the Dajia Mazu App and the Mazu Pilgrimage Real-Time Satellite Tracking Service. This year, the team has further integrated artificial intelligence and ESG principles, introducing a popular Digital Pilgrimage Passport, along with AI-powered driver fatigue monitoring and automated carbon-emissions inventory systems, to create a safer and more sustainable pilgrimage experience throughout the nine-day, eight-night event.
To enhance the pilgrimage experience, the app’s Digital Pilgrimage Passport allows participants to record their journey digitally. Pilgrims can check in within a 500-meter radius of designated temples during the 12-hour period before or after the scheduled arrival time. These check-ins create a personal pilgrimage record documenting their spiritual journey. Dajia Jenn Lann Temple has also announced that participants who use the app to document the entire pilgrimage route will receive an official pilgrimage certificate recognizing their accomplishment.
Through satellite positioning technology developed by the Feng Chia University team, pilgrims can track the location of Mazu’s palanquin in real time and adjust their itinerary accordingly. Whether walking ahead of or behind the procession, users can easily monitor the pilgrimage’s progress and avoid congestion, creating a smoother and more flexible experience for participants.

The Dajia Mazu App provides a comprehensive range of smart services, including:
- Real-time palanquin location tracking and navigation
- Pilgrimage route and estimated arrival-time information
- Locations of nearby convenience facilities, including convenience stores, fast-food restaurants, gas stations, wash stations, first-aid stations, and YouBike rental stations
- Four-angle live video streaming of the Mazu palanquin procession
These features enable pilgrims to plan and manage their journey more effectively while staying connected to the event.

To ensure the safety and smooth operation of the nine-day pilgrimage, Feng Chia University collaborated with SkyEyes GPS Technology, the Geographic Information Systems Research Center, Chunghwa Telecom, Junline Smart Technology, and YouBike, forming a multidisciplinary technology team.
The team installed advanced Driver Attention Assistance Systems on escort vehicles to monitor driver fatigue in real time and provide alerts for abnormal lane departures, helping safeguard transportation safety throughout the event.
To support ESG and sustainable development goals, the team also introduced the SkyEyes AI Assistant, which assists with rapid personnel deployment and low-carbon route planning for pilgrimage support staff. Combined with a carbon-management platform, the system can automatically generate carbon-emissions reports aligned with international standards, encouraging participants to engage in the pilgrimage in a more environmentally responsible manner.
